Resilience in the face of adversity

As an organisation dedicated to the long-term prosperity of our rural industries, and based in Wagga Wagga, Riverina NSW, we see and feel the impact of the current devastating drought all around us.

Recently, travelling from Wagga Wagga to Armidale, I was shocked by the impact the drought is having on some of our most productive districts around Gunnedah and the Liverpool Plains.

And we all know when the land is hurting, so too are our farmers, their families and our rural communities.

Although there will never be a perfect solution to drought (other than rain), AgriFutures Australia is investing in projects to improve farmers’ resilience like the research we are supporting to develop drought resistance pasture seed varieties and a new rice variety which uses less water.

The Australian Government’s drought relief in the form of tax write-offs, low interest loans, faster processing of applications for help and support for regional communities are welcomed. Australian Government drought assistance measures and state and territory government drought agency contacts can be accessed on the Australian Government's Department of Agriculture and Water Resources website.

"Let us not forget that our farmers are resilient, innovative and incredibly optimistic. And it will rain!" These encouraging words and the image above comes from Aimee Snowden, our
Rural Women's Award Alumni and founder of Little Brick Pastoral, a series of LEGO® photographs which aim to educate our urban cousins about life on the land ... including when it's tough!
